Rupert Knauf descubrió el polo casi por casualidad y hoy, junto a sus tres hijos, lidera La SAGA Polo. El proyecto busca unir generaciones y demostrar que el polo también puede ser una historia de valores, compromiso y crecimiento compartido.

- Contanos un poco sobre vos, para quienes no te conocen.
Nací en Alemania, pero mi hogar está en Mónaco. Soy una persona con pasión por el deporte, un estilo de vida activo y, sobre todo, mi familia. Lo que empezó como un desafío personal —aprender a montar y jugar al polo desde cero— evolucionó en La SAGA, un proyecto familiar que combina tradición e innovación.
En este camino, descubrí el poder del compromiso, la asociación y la equidad —valores que guían tanto mi vida profesional como el espíritu de nuestro equipo.
Para mí, el polo es más que un deporte; es una forma de conectar a las personas, fomentar el crecimiento y construir algo significativo juntos. Con propósito, con colaboración, con orgullo —eso no es solo un lema, sino una reflexión de lo que intento ser cada día.
- ¿Cómo comenzó tu conexión con el polo? ¿Fue algo que corría en la familia o una pasión que descubriste con el tiempo?
Comenzó casi por accidente hace unos años, mientras veía a mi hija Sofía, que tenía ocho años, tomar clases de equitación en el St. Tropez Polo Club. En realidad, nunca me había subido a un caballo antes, pero quería probar algo completamente nuevo, algo que me desafiara y que al mismo tiempo nos uniera como familia.
Desde la primera clase quedé enganchado. Hay algo mágico en el polo: el ritmo entre el jinete y el caballo, el trabajo en equipo, la tradición y, por supuesto, la competencia. Así que rápidamente se convirtió en un viaje familiar, con mis otros dos hijos sumándose también, y eso es lo que lo hace tan significativo para mí hoy.
- ¿Qué te motivó a crear La SAGA Polo? ¿Hay una historia detrás del nombre?
La SAGA nació de un sueño familiar. Cuando empezamos a aprender, rápidamente se convirtió en algo más que un hobby: se transformó en algo que compartíamos y amábamos. Yo quería crear un equipo donde mis hijos pudieran crecer, donde yo pudiera desarrollarme como un verdadero jugador de polo, donde nuestros caballos fueran cuidados como parte de la familia, y donde pudiéramos construir amistades duraderas dentro del deporte.
El nombre La SAGA es muy cercano a mi corazón. Son las iniciales de mi esposa y mis hijos, pero también es una palabra que significa una historia que se transmite de generación en generación. Quiero que se convierta en una historia sobre la familia, el coraje y la construcción de algo significativo juntos.
- ¿Cuáles fueron los mayores desafíos cuando empezaste como patrón y propietario del equipo?
El mayor desafío fue empezar desde cero, tanto como jinete como dueño de equipo. Tuve que aprender no solo el deporte en sí, sino también todo lo que pasa detrás de escena: el cuidado de los caballos, el entrenamiento y la construcción de una cultura de equipo desde la base. Es algo muy gratificante.
Tuve la suerte de encontrar a las personas adecuadas desde el principio. Marcello (Puma) fue fundamental para ayudarme a dar vida a este proyecto. Su experiencia, su guía y su apoyo constante han sido invaluables. Su club, La Pampa, en Fréjus, es la base perfecta para los entrenamientos fuera de temporada, donde jugamos torneos divertidos y amistosos al final de la temporada europea.
El acceso a buenos caballos también hizo una gran diferencia, porque nos permitió entrenar de forma adecuada y ganar confianza desde el principio. Y tener la oportunidad de pasar tiempo con Gonzalito Pieres ha sido un privilegio increíble: su profesionalismo, su humildad y su comprensión del juego me han inspirado profundamente.
Y, por supuesto, el apoyo de todos en el St. Tropez Polo Club, donde pasamos la mayor parte de la temporada y donde el polo está muy bien organizado y es competitivo, pero sigue teniendo un espíritu de gran familia.
Mirando hacia atrás, esos primeros desafíos —y las personas que me ayudaron a superarlos— realmente moldearon los valores que hoy definen a La SAGA: compromiso, equidad y colaboración.
- ¿Cómo definís el espíritu o la identidad de La SAGA Polo?
El espíritu de La SAGA se construye sobre tres pilares: propósito, colaboración y orgullo. Esas palabras guían todo lo que hacemos —desde cómo entrenamos y cuidamos a nuestros caballos hasta cómo tratamos a todos dentro y fuera de la organización—.
Para nosotros, el polo no es solo un deporte: es una forma de construir relaciones, crecer juntos y crear algo duradero, como familia y como equipo.
Es un equilibrio entre profesionalismo y calidez, ambición y humildad, tradición e innovación. Queremos aportar un enfoque moderno al polo manteniendo los valores que lo hacen tan especial. En el fondo, La SAGA trata sobre la conexión entre las personas, los caballos y un sueño compartido.
- ¿Qué papel tienen jugadores como Bauti Beguerie dentro del proyecto?
Jugadores como Bauti son fundamentales para lo que estamos construyendo en La SAGA. Desde el principio, quise que nuestro equipo combinara el espíritu familiar con el verdadero profesionalismo, y tener a alguien de su nivel y carácter lo hace posible.
En la cancha, Bauti aporta una habilidad, disciplina e inteligencia de juego excepcionales. Fuera de ella, es un mentor increíble —no solo para mí, sino también para mis hijos y para todos los que lo rodean—.
Él marca el tono de cómo entrenamos, cómo tratamos a nuestros caballos y cómo nos representamos como equipo.
Tener un jugador como Bauti significa que la generación más joven puede ver, en la práctica, lo que significan la dedicación y la humildad. Para mí, eso no tiene precio. Es exactamente el tipo de ejemplo que define el espíritu de La SAGA.
Actualmente apoyás al equipo La Fija. ¿Qué te gustaría que La SAGA representara en el mundo del polo en el futuro?
Sí, apoyar a La Fija me da mucho placer. Mi esperanza es que La SAGA llegue a representar una forma moderna y familiar de entender el polo. Me gustaría que la gente nos vea no solo como un equipo competitivo, sino como una comunidad donde jugadores, familias y caballos puedan desarrollarse juntos.
Queremos mostrar que el polo puede evolucionar: que puede ser más inclusivo, mejor organizado y profundamente respetuoso de sus tradiciones y de los animales que lo hacen posible. Si logramos crear oportunidades para los jóvenes jugadores, apoyar el bienestar de los caballos y hacer que el deporte sea más accesible para nuevas audiencias, entonces habremos conseguido algo verdaderamente significativo.
¿Cómo te gustaría que el público perciba la historia y la esencia de La SAGA?
Como una historia de pasión, propósito y colaboración: el viaje de una familia que creció hasta convertirse en algo mucho más grande que sí misma. Nuestra historia todavía es muy joven, pero desde el principio ha estado definida por un amor genuino por el deporte, el respeto hacia nuestros caballos y un compromiso con hacer las cosas de la manera correcta.
La esencia de La SAGA no se trata de cuánto tiempo llevamos jugando, sino de cómo abordamos el juego: con humildad, profesionalismo y corazón. Espero que la gente vea un equipo que valora tanto el respeto, el trabajo en equipo y el crecimiento como la competencia. Si eso se convierte en parte de nuestro legado, me sentiré muy orgulloso.
Hoy, las redes sociales y el contenido audiovisual son esenciales para conectar con los fans. ¿Cómo manejan ese aspecto?
Vemos las redes sociales y el contenido audiovisual como una forma importante de compartir lo que La SAGA representa. El polo es un deporte tan hermoso —lleno de energía, emoción y trabajo en equipo—, que mostrar eso visualmente ayuda a que más personas se conecten con él.
Nuestro objetivo no es solo publicar resultados, sino contar la historia que hay detrás: los caballos, el trabajo, las personas y los pequeños momentos que hacen que todo valga la pena.
Dicho esto, todavía estamos al principio de ese camino. Nuestras redes sociales son bastante básicas por ahora, y estamos trabajando en un plan para crecer de manera cuidadosa y auténtica. Por el momento, creemos que las acciones hablan más fuerte que las palabras. Todavía no tenemos una base de fans, y eso está bien — no se trata de la fama, sino del impacto positivo que queremos tener en el deporte.

- How did your connection with Polo begin? Was it something that ran in the family, or a passion that you discovered over time?
It began almost by accident a few years ago while watching my 8 year old daughter Sofia taking riding lesson at St. Tropez Polo Club. I actually never sat on a horse before, but I wanted to try something completely new – something that would challenge me and bring the family together.
From the first lesson, I was hooked. There is something magical about polo: the rhythm between rider and horse, the teamwork, the tradition and of course the competition. So it quickly became a family journey with my other two children joining in, and that’s what makes it so meaningful to me now.
- What motivated you to create La Saga Polo? Is there a story behind the name?
La SAGA was born out of a family dream. When we started learning, it quickly became more than a hobby – it turned into something we shared and loved. I wanted to create a team where my children could grow, where I could develop into a real polo player, where our horses were cared for like family, and where we could build lasting friendships within the sport. The name La SAGA is very close to my heart, it’s the initials of my wife and children, but also a word that means a story passed down through generations. I want it to become a story about family, courage, and building something meaningful together.
- What were the biggest challenges when you started out as a patron and owner of the team?
The biggest challenge was to be starting from scratch – both as a rider and team owner. I had to learn not only the sport itself, but also everything going on behind the scenes: horse care, training, and building a team culture from the ground up. It is very rewarding. I was lucky though to find the right people early on.
Marcello (Puma) has been instrumental in helping me bring this project to live. His experience, guidance and steady support have been invaluable. His club “La Pampa” in Frejus is the perfect off-season training base where we play some fun and friendly tournaments at the end of the European Season. Access to good horses has also made a huge difference, allowing us to train properly and build confidence from the start. And having the opportunity to spend time with Gonzalito Pieres has been an incredible privilege – his professionalism, humility, and understanding of the game have inspired me deeply. And of course the support of everyone at St. Tropez Polo Club where we spend most of the season and where the Polo is well organised and competitive while still feeling as a big family.
Looking back, those early challenges – and the people who helped me navigate them – truly shaped the values that define La SAGA today: commitment, fairness, and partnership.
- How do you define the spirit or identity of La Saga Polo?
The spirit of La SAGA is built on three pillars: purpose, partnership, and pride. Those words guide everything we do – from how we train and care for our horses to how we treat everyone inside and outside the organisation. For us, Polo is not just a sport: it’s a way we build relationships, grow together and create something lasting as a family and as a team. It’s a balance between professionalism and warmth, ambition and humility, tradition and innovation.
We want to bring a modern approach to polo while keeping the values that make it so special. At its heart, La SAGA is about connection – between people, horses, and a shared dream.
- What role does the inclusion of players like Bauti Beguerie play in the project?
Players like Bauti are central to what we’re building at La SAGA. From the beginning, I wanted our team to combine family spirit with true professionalism — and having someone of his caliber and character makes that possible. On the field, Bauti brings exceptional skill, discipline, and game intelligence. Off the field, he’s an incredible mentor — not only to me, but to my children and everyone around him. He sets the tone for how we train, how we treat our horses, and how we represent ourselves as a team. Having a player like Bauti means our younger generation can see what dedication and humility look like in practice. For me, that’s invaluable. It’s exactly the kind of example that defines the spirit of La SAGA.
- You currently support the La Fija team. What would you like La SAGA to represent in the world of polo in the future?
Yes, supporting La Fija gives me a lot of pleasure. My hope is that La SAGA will come to represent a modern, family-driven approach to polo. I would like people to see us not only as a competitive team, but as a community where players, families, and horses all thrive together.
We want to show that polo can evolve — that it can be more inclusive, better organised, and deeply respectful of its traditions and of the animals that make it possible. If we can help create opportunities for young players, support the welfare of horses, and make the sport more accessible to new audiences, then we’ll have achieved something meaningful.
- How would you like the public to perceive the history and essence of La SAGA?
A story of passion, purpose, and partnership — a family’s journey that grew into something much bigger than itself. Our history is still very young, but from the beginning it has been defined by a genuine love for the sport, respect for our horses, and a commitment to doing things the right way.
The essence of La SAGA is not about how long we’ve been playing, but about how we approach the game — with humility, professionalism, and heart. I hope people see a team that values respect, teamwork, and growth as much as competition. If that becomes part of our legacy, I’ll be very proud.
- Today, social media and audiovisual content are essential for connecting with fans> How do you manage that aspect?
We see social media and audiovisual content as an important way to share what La SAGA is about. Polo is such a beautiful sport — full of energy, emotion, and teamwork — and showing that visually helps more people connect with it. Our aim isn’t just to post results, but to tell the story behind them: the horses, the work, the people, and the small moments that make it all worthwhile.
That said, we’re still right at the beginning of that journey. Our social media is quite basic for now, and we’re working on a plan to grow it carefully and authentically. For the moment, we believe that actions speak louder than words. We don’t have a fan base yet, and that’s okay — it’s not about fame. It’s about the positive impact we want to have on the sport.
