Pero tan peculiar nombre sobrevino, según cuenta Jax, “en una tanda de cerveza luego de los partidos. Uno de los jugadores jóvenes dijo que esto era ‘el lugar de los viejos tiempos del polo’, lo cual conllevó a una acalorada discusión entre el grupo de Ginger Baker (NR: el famoso baterista de Cream), mi padre, Alan, y un par de gente grande que en ese momento eran miembros del club. El club, creado en 2001, se encuentra en Sudáfrica, exactamente en Swartbert, Kwazulu Natal, una pequeña comunidad agrícola. La idea apunta a un polo familiar, para chicos, damas y todos aquellos que quieran compartir su pasión por el deporte y los caballos. Por otro lado, ya cuentan con un programa de cría, con la idea de expandir el polo en la zona.
Jax concedió una amable charla a Prensa Polo, para contarnos sobre las aventuras del polo en Jurassic Park Polo Club.
¿Cuándo se creó el club?
Jurassic Park Polo fue fundado en 2001, y está ubicado al pie de las montañas de Drakensbert, a 2000 metros sobre el nivel del mar.
Why the name Jurassic Park Polo? ¿De dónde surgió llamarlo Jurassic Park?
La historia del nombre es algo que todo el mundo nos pregunta. Todo surgió en una tanda de cervezas después de un partido y uno de los jugadores jóvenes del grupo dijo que este era el lugar del polo de los viejos tiempos. Ello llevó a una acalorada discusión entre el grupo de Ginger Baker, mi padre, Alan, y otra gente grande, que eran miembros por entonces. Una de las sugerencias fue llamarlo Geriatric Park, pero para evitar ofensas, decidimos llamarlo Jurasic Park.
¿Dónde está ubicado exactamente?
En una pequeña ciudad agrícola llamada Swartberg, en Kwazulu Natal.
¿Cómo ves el polo tanto en Sudáfrica como en tu club?
Fuerte y prosperando; vienen muchos chicos jóvenes a jugar.
¿Cuáles son los valores que tratan de promover en el club?
Queremos enseñar la forma correcta de jugar al polo, y sobre todo, jugar por amor al deporte y la pasión por los caballos.
¿Qué considerás que hace a Jurassic Park un club diferente?
Crear vínculos. Mi padre siempre me dijo que los vínculos más fuertes e importantes entre los clubes y los jugadores se crean cuando se juntan los domingos luego de los partidos, para una taza de té, sándwiches, quizás una cerveza. Y yo siempre mantuve este principio.
¿Qué planes e ideas tenés para que el polo continúe creciendo?
Polo de base, chicos y el polo orientado a las familias.
¿Cuántos miembros tienen ahora?
En este momento, tenemos unos veinte miembros
¿Hay jugadores argentinos?
Todavía no.
¿Quiénes arman los equipos?
Los veinte miembros, todos son jugadores.
How many horses do you own? ¿Cuántos caballos tienen?
Contamos con 180 caballos.
¿Cómo se organizan con los caballos?
Tenemos un programa de cría con tres padrillos. Algunas de las líneas de sangre se originaron en los tiempos de mi abuelo.
¿Tienen escuela de polo para chicos?
Sí, por supuesto. La escuela de polo es el lugar donde los chicos pasan más tiempo en sus vacaciones.
¿Qué torneos tienen de forma anual?
En Jurassic Park hacemos solo uno por año, pero nos involucramos con torneos en toda la zona.
¿Cuál es el torneo más importante del club?
El East Griqualand Champs, para equipos de hasta 18 goles de handicap.
¿Organizan torneos para mujeres?
Sí, armamos uno internacional en 2020, entre Sudáfrica y Holanda, y esperamos armar otros similares que sean eventos con regularidad.

JURASSIC PARK POLO CLUB – “Polo in South Africa is strong and thriving”

When was the club founded?
Jurassic Park Polo was founded in 2001 and is located at the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains, at an altitude of 2000 meters above sea level.

How do you see polo in South Africa and in your club?
Strong and thriving, we have a lot of youngsters coming through.
What are the values you try to promote in your club?
We try to keep it real by teaching the right style of polo and to play polo for the love of the game and the passion for the horses.
What do you consider to be your different as a club?
My father always said to me that clubs and players who get together after chukkas and have a cuppa tea and sandwiches and maybe a few beers and a braai on Sunday are the clubs that form a strong bond. I have always maintained this principle.
What plans/ideas do you have for polo to continue to grow?
Grass roots polo, the juniors and family orientated polo.
How many members do you currently have?
At the moment, the club has twenty members.
Are there any Argentine players?
Not yet.
How many people make up the polo team?
All twenty members are players.
How many horses do you own?
We have 180m horses.
How are you organised with horses?
We have a breeding program with 3 stallions. Some of the breeding lines originated from my grandfather.
Do you have a polo school for children?
Yes. The school kids in the area usually spend most of their holidays with us. We have clients attending the polo school from all over the world on a regular basis.
What annual tournaments do you have?
Jurassic Park hosts one a year, but we are involved in the tournaments in our area as well.
Whats the clubs most important tournament?
East Griqualand Champs, which has seen 18 goal polo played over the past few years.
Do you organise tournaments for women?
We hosted an international in 2020 between SA and Netherlands and we hoping to make womens internationals more of a regular event.
