Kayley Mariah Smith ha sido, sin duda, una de las sorpresas más agradables de la última temporada de polo en Inglaterra. Además es una jugadora habilidosa, sin ningún antecedente en el polo. El fútbol siempre fue su pasión, pero un día decidió cambiar de deporte y jugar al polo…. todo un reto. Y le fue muy bien. Fue contratada por una de las organizaciones más poderosas dentro de este deporte, UAE Polo, sustituyendo a Sheikha Maitha, jugó uno de los torneos más destacados del mundo, el British Open por la Cowdray Gold Cup por primera vez en su historia… y se llevó a casa el codiciado trofeo dorado.
Prensa Polo tuvo el placer de hablar con esta talentosa chica, que hizo historia junto a sus tres compañeros de equipo: Lukin Monteverde, Barto Castagnola y Tommy Beresford.
¿Cómo empezaste a jugar al polo?
Estaba en Estados Unidos jugando al fútbol, ya que siempre fue mi pasión; nunca hubo un plan B. Volví a casa en verano después de una lesión y mi hermana me invitó a ir a una clase de polo, que ella jugaba en la universidad; así que fui, porque pensé que podía ser divertido, ¡y empecé a ir siempre! Dejé de jugar al fútbol y empecé a ir a más y más clases a medida que me volvía adicta. Un caballo se convirtió en dos, y luego en una cadena. Nunca tuve dinero para comprar caballos caros y lujosos, así que a menudo ofrecía trabajo gratis a cambio de caballos más baratos, o los compraba baratos en el hipódromo para hacerme con ellos.
¿Cómo surgió la oportunidad de jugar con UAE sustituyendo a Sheikha Maitha?
Tommy me fichó el año pasado cuando me dijo que UAE buscaba un sustituto para Maitha. UAE y Lucas me dieron la oportunidad de llevarme a mí y a mis caballos a la finca Manor, donde tiene su sede la organización, y allí pude empezar con el equipo.
¿Qué podés decirnos de la organización UAE y, sobre todo, del hombre que está detrás de ella, Lucas Monteverde?
La organización es enorme: son muchas las cosas que hay que hacer para armar con éxito una organización que tiene la vara muy alta. Además de los jugadores que se ven en la cancha y de los entrenadores que están en los palenques, hay un equipo detrás que es cada vez más grande: los preparadores, directivos, pilotos, herradores, veterinarios y entrenadores. Todos trabajan muy duro y quieren lo mejor para el equipo y, por supuesto, el objetivo es ganar. Tener éxito no es nada fácil, pero Lucas es increíble. Está en las caballerizas todos los días y le apasiona la organización. Es evidente lo mucho que significa para él que el equipo y los jugadores lo hagan bien. Él y Maitha dan oportunidades a los jugadores que no se encuentran en ningún sitio: quieren que los jugadores crezcan y mejoren, y son personas auténticas e increíbles”. Jaso Crotto pasó mucho tiempo conmigo montando y practicando, y le debo mucho por todo lo que intentó enseñarme.
¿Cómo te sentiste jugando con tres chicos jóvenes y talentosos como Tommy, Lukin y Barto?
Los chicos son jóvenes, entusiastas y tienen un talento increíble. Aprendí mucho jugando a su lado durante los partidos y los entrenamientos, y creo que con cada partido ganaban más confianza en mí como cuarta jugadora. No todos los días tenés la oportunidad de jugar en un equipo con polistas de ese calibre, así que estoy eternamente agradecido a UAE por haberme dado la oportunidad de estar allí en primer lugar.
Ganar la Gold Cup es el mayor sueño del polo inglés. ¿Cuáles fueron tus sensaciones al jugarla por primera vez y, además, llevarte la copa?
Jugar en la Gold Cup es el sueño de todo jugador, y para la mayoría es, lamentablemente, una realidad improbable. Con cada partido que jugaba sólo quería aprender y mejorar todo lo que pudiera. Aunque estaba nerviosa en cada partido, me sentía muy agradecida y, sinceramente, muy feliz de estar ahí fuera con los mejores. Pude jugar con y contra los mejores jugadores del mundo, y eso no tiene precio. Ganar la Gold Cup fue un sueño hecho realidad. Lloré y lloré de pura felicidad y emoción. Toda la experiencia ha sido increíble, y el apoyo que he recibido de mi familia y mis amigos no tiene comparación.
¿Cuáles son sus planes para el futuro cercano?
Quiero jugar todo lo que pueda. El sueño de todo jugador es llegar a ser el mejor. No vengo de una familia rica ni de polo, así que tengo que trabajar duro, pero lo sabía cuando empecé este viaje; así que solo quiero tener tanto éxito como pueda, y si eso significa trabajar duro, que así sea.

Kayley Mariah Smith – From football to winner of the British Open
“My mum is Irish and my dad is English. I was born and grew up in South East London and to be honest I grew up with a football at my feet – I did not even know what polo was!”.
Kayley Mariah Smith has been, without doubts, one of the nicest suprises of the last polo season in England. Moreove, a skilled player with no polo background at all. Football was always her passion, but one day she decided to swap sports and play polo…. quite a challenge indeed. And she did very well. She was hired by one of the most powerful organisations witihin the sport, UAE Polo, subbing in for Sheikha Maitha, played one of the most remarkable tournaments of the world, the British Open for the Cowdray Gold Cup for the first time ever… and she took the coveted golden trophy home.
Prensa Polo had the delight to speak to this skilled girl, who made history alongside her three team mates – Lukin Monteverde, Barto Castagnola and Tommy Beresford.
How did you start to play polo?
I was in America playing football as that was always my passion – there never was a plan B. I came home for the summer after an injury and my sister invited me to join a polo lesson after she took it up at university, so I went as I thought it could be fun and then I never stopped going! I stopped playing football and started going for more and more lessons as I became addicted. One horse turned into two, and then that turned into a string. I never had the money to buy fancy, expensive horses so I often offered free work in exchange for cheaper horses, or I bought them cheap from the racetrack to make myself.
How did the opportunity to play with UAE subbing in for Sheikha Maitha come up?
I was picked up last year by Tommy when he told me that UAE was looking for a substitute for Maitha. I was given the opportunity by UAE and Lucas to bring myself and my horses to manor farm where the organization is based, and there I was able to start my journey with the team.
What can you tell us about the UAE organisation and mostly the man behind it, Lucas Monteverde?
The organization is huge – there is so much that goes into organizing a successful high goal organization. Besides the players you see on the field and the coaches that are on the sidelines, there is an ever bigger team behind the scenes; all the grooms, managers, pilots, farriers, vets and trainers. Everybody works so hard and wants the best for the team and of course the goal is to win. There is nothing easy about being successful, but Lucas is amazing. He is at the yard every day and he is so passionate about the organization. It is obvious how much it means to him for the team and players to do well. Himself and Maitha give opportunities to players that are not found just anywhere – they want players to grow and improve and they are just genuinely, incredible people. Jaso Crotto spent a lot of time with me out riding and practicing and I owe him a lot for everything he tried to teach me.
How did you feel playing with three young and talented boys such as Tommy, Lukin and Barto?
The boys are young, enthusiastic and incredibly talented players. I learnt so much from playing along side them during games and practices and I think that with each game they gained more confidence with me as their fourth player – they helped teach and coach me through absolutely everything. It is not every day that you get to play on a team with players of that calibre, so I am eternally grateful to UAE for giving me that opportunity to be there in the first place.
Winning the Gold Cup is the ultimate dream within English polo. So, what were your feelings about playing it for the first time and in addition, claim the cup?
Playing in the Gold Cup is every players dream, and to most it is unfortunately an unlikely reality. With every game I played I just wanted to learn and improve as much as I could. Although I was nervous each game, I just felt so appreciative and honestly just so happy to be out there with the world’s finest players. I got to play with and against the best players in the world, and that is priceless. Winning the Gold Cup was just an absolute dream come true. I cried and cried with pure happiness and just raw emotion. The whole experience has been unbelievable and the support I have received from family and friends is second to none.
What are your plans for the near future ?
I want to play as much as I can. Every player’s dream is to become the best you can be. I did not come from money or a polo family, so I have to work hard but I knew that when I started this journey so I just want to be as successful as I can be, and if that means working hard then so be it.
